Buying furniture: How to correctly measure your space and why.

08/03/2025

We don't buy furniture every day, which is why choosing it is a very critical process that requires research, process, and planning so that we don't regret it later.

After all, furniture shapes the aesthetics and functionality of our space, which is why before purchasing a particular piece of furniture, we first need to measure our space. Because the wrong - or approximately so - dimensions can "burden" us with a non-functional and inconvenient piece of furniture that we will regret buying every day. And because life is too short for whining and homes/offices without decorative flow, we list some basic steps that will help you get prepared when choosing furniture.

1. Start with a blueprint

Grab a tape measure, a piece of paper, and a pencil and simply jot down as much information as you can. Record the shape and dimensions of your room, including the length and width of the space. Don't forget to mark locations such as doors, windows, radiators, and electrical outlets, which may affect furniture placement.

2. Measure the space as a whole, including the height of the room

The height of the room is also important, especially if you plan to buy tall furniture, such as wardrobes or bookcases. Make sure you leave enough space between the furniture and the ceiling for practical and aesthetic reasons or measure accurately if you wish to reach the ceiling.

3. Consider the dimensions of the furniture

Before buying any piece of furniture, check its exact dimensions. Note the length, width, and height, and compare them to the measurements of your room. Remember to leave enough space around the furniture for comfort and freedom of movement.

4. Consider access

A common mistake is to only measure the room and forget about the path the furniture needs to take to reach its destination. Make sure that doors, hallways, and stairs have sufficient clearance to accommodate the furniture you choose. In cases where access to the furniture in the space is difficult, this criterion may even determine the furniture itself or its design!

5. Use tape

A handy method is to use tape to "draw" the outline of the furniture you plan to bring onto the floor. This will help you see how it will look in the space and whether there is enough space around it. 'Feel' the space!
